Unions? How did we get on Unions?
I read a post and brought up the union subject.
just an fyi for anyone interested - there is a major drive on to push the bill forward for national healthcare in the usa.
you can sign the petition by going to http://www.onecarenow.org/.. it has gone through one part of the process last year and now the push is on to get it moved to the next level - it is backed by over 400 groups including the uaw i believe.
it is no longer if it happens, it is only a matter of time as to when it happens.

Thanks Lisa.
Occasionally I like to get involved in these types of debates and participate until people make personal attacks. For someone who doesn't know me from Adam to suggest I don't care is really insulting.
A lot of people don't understand, or refuse to understand, the symbiotic relationship between a union and an employer. It is not "us vs them" most of the time. A lot of people base their opinions on what they hear in the news and the news tends to emphasize labor/mgmt conflict because "if it bleeds, it leads."
I do disagree with you about unions. I would like to see unions reborn. I believe that SOME companies treat their labor force like cannon fodder. I have participated in outreach programs with non-union work forces but it is a struggle. Some people are really worried about being branded "union agitators" by their employer. I encourage people working in non-union environments to "Organize, organize, organize." Sometimes the threat of an organized workforce will give reason for employers to re-evaluate priorities. Some workforces do not want to unionize because they already recieve fair compensation for the work performed.
I'm sorry if I am sounding combative here, but the airline unions have made concession throughout the industry. Again, it is that symbiotic relationship. Whats the point of bankrupting your employer? I do hope the airline unions did have language in the agreements regarding reopeners when the goals and objectives of the concessions are met. I would guess they do. Unions have been on this road before.
Thanks again, Lisa, for your post. I've read a lot of what you have written in this thread. You have an interesting point of view.

Our contract is currently being negotiated with the employer so I hear the words "health and welfare" quite often. I'll pass on to the Business Agent that we shouldn't use these terms and see what the response is. Other unions also use the terms. You can e-mail them if you care to:

For the record, I am opposed to any kind of tax dollars going to support a for-profit entity if that support is a grant. I do support the idea that the government may LOAN money to an enterprise that cannot secure a loan from another source if the company has a business plan that suggests the company has a fairly good chance of repaying the loan. Example of these loans were to the Chrysler Corp and to Harley-Davidson. Both companies repaid the loans in full. Without federal loans both of these companies would be in the history books.
you really don't care about anyone else do you? Why did you even list this one?
LOL!!!! I was wondering how long it would take for a personal attack. You don't know me. Please try to stay on topic without talking out of your ass.

Corporations are businesses that that work for shareholders.
And a lot of unions invest money in the stockmarket, particularly member's retirement funds, so unions are also shareholders. Billions and billions and billions of dollars. Please make a note of it.
Unions recognize that taking paycuts are better than having a company go bankrupt. It's called common sense. A lot of employees are individual shareholders of the company they work for. Everyone knows that a bankrupt company's share value tanks so it is in everyone's interest that the company not just survive but thrive.

Clever how you left out part of the sentence. Here is what I actually wrote:
health and welfare programs for employees and their families with the same companies
Note I plainly stated unions negotiate for health and welfare benefits with companies. Just so you know, the word "welfare" is not exclusive to government. In the working world "welfare" relates to things like vacation time, overtime, workplace safety, etc. You know, employee welfare. Some unions use "well being" instead of "welfare."
Its not nice to snip portions of a sentence and use it out of context. That practice is common to organizations like the watchtower society though.
Peace

It's not something Unions work to expand or shrink.
LOL! In that case big companies like AT&T or Verizon can't regulate the internet...
Do you belong to a union? Ever been to a union meeting or rally? Read union newspapers? Where do you think a sizeable chunk of union dues go? Big companies aren't the only ones lobbying for causes or supporting candidates. I support most of the lobbying my union does and even some of the politicians they endorse/donate to.
frozen one - proud of my union most of the time
.
so what are you doing this fine sunday evening (now or later for some...maybe you've even had your evening already).
i am going to be eating pizza, with my gf and watching tv and thats about it.
I'm so sorry about your grandma Morty.
I'm planning on going to see Kenny Wayne Shepherd tonight. Its outdoors though and it has been raining steady. I won't stand in the rain to see someone I've seen before. Then I am going to get a good nights sleep because I turn 44 tomorrow. A few years back I had this crazy idea to go for a long bicycle ride on my birthday (I'm talking up to 100 miles) and the tradition continues. I don't think I'll make 100 miles as it has been too hot to do a lot of training rides in the last few weeks. The minimum will be 44 miles though. I'll have to see how I'm feeling as the ride progresses. If I don't have a massive heart attack during the ride, tomorrow evening I'll have cake and ice cream with some friends and then we are off to a stripper bar for boobs and beer. Good thing I have Tuesday off. This making up for uncelebrated birthdays during my youth takes a toll.

The unions that are pushing for national health are the same unions that negotiated ever increasing and expanding health and welfare programs for employees and their families with the same companies that are moving offshore because some companies can no longer afford the union's demands. Now that those unions have bled their employers dry, those unions are looking for another entity with even deeper pockets than say General Motors. Finding deeper pockets (in this case the feds) will do nothing to contain the constantly increasing costs of health care but will add millions of people to the entitlement class which is the ultimate goal of progressives.
frozen one - proud union member for years and years.
i was at bethel not long ago.
and other then the hypocrisy i saw the most beautifull women in the world all in one place.
bethel makes the miss universe pagent look silly.did i mention these women are from all over the world, bethelites can stay in other countries for cheap because they can stay in assembly halls.
I dont know if you understand just how good these women look. And how many of them from all over the world flock to bethel.
Women (and men) from all over the world go to NYC anyway. I don't know why bethel would be any different. Sounds like you are kicking yourself for not taking advantage and grabbing yourself a foreign bride. If thats what you want do an internet search on mail order brides. My guess is that you will get back hundreds, if not thousands, of web sites. Or scape together a couple grand and go to the former Soviet Union, South America, Asia or wherever and meet someone. Seems like that would be a lot easier than wasting a few years slaving for the society. If you want a jw woman from another country go to one of those international conventions. If you are trying to promote the idea that going to bethel will put you in a flash car with a super model wife living in a luxury filled apartment then frankly I think you are nuts. (BTW, if I were you I wouldn't be telling any future dates you might have, jw or not, the story about being impressed by the elders wife running when he ordered her to.)
the good book?
my arse it is!.
i'll kick us off.. (1 corinthians 7:8-9) 8. .
On a more serious note,
In Acts 15, "Abstain from blood." Really bad advice in my opinion.
